- Abstract: In just 30 years, exoplanet science has expanded from the first detections to detailed characterization of exoplanets. The next frontier is rocky exoplanets, essential for assessing habitability but challenging to study. Ultra-short-period rocky planets, or “lava worlds,” are especially compelling: their extreme proximity to their stars makes them easier to observe, while dayside temperatures high enough to melt or vaporize rock directly link their interiors and atmospheres. In this talk, I will present the latest JWST results on these extreme worlds and discuss what they reveal about atmosphere–interior interactions, planetary evolution, and the diversity of rocky exoplanets.
